My Poetry
Creative writing may be based on fact but it is also the work of artifice.
Poets play with words, turn them into metaphors, use similes
but it is the poems that often dictate the changes.
I may start with a single thought: maybe provoked by a piece of music, a news bulletin or an image –
words collect on the page and then something happens.
Ideas present themselves, direct changes – words that sing appear and disappear if the song is not quite right.
What may begin as a statement, becomes a question or vice versa.
My method when painting, is to scrumble a thin dark colour, into the white ground. Shadows are my first concern setting the tone of the painting – details remain understated, supporting the mood, the visual drama and movement of the whole.
For me writing is the same.
I begin with an undisciplined collection of quick, surface thoughts – maybe scribbled on any surface available at the time.
These are shuffled, thrown into a loose structure and then the excess is pared back in the search for fine points.
